to build a
DEMOISELLE
scale free flight model.
The
DEMOISELLE
is one of the most historic, yet seldom seen, aircraft ever designed. It was built in 1908 by Santos Dumont. In 1910 Popular Mechanics magazine had a feature article on it. You could say that it was the original ultralight aircraft. The engine developed only 35 horsepower pulling the plane along at 45 mph. It was a featured aircraft in that great old aviation movie "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines."
Santos Dumont was a Brazilian inventor and wore a full-length heavy overcoat when he flew his plane in Paris. Since he couldn't reach into his pants pocket through the overcoat to get his watch, he strapped his pocket watch to his wrist. Thus he "invented" the wrist watch!
Here is the rare construction article and plan for building a 26" span, Baby Bee .049 powered free flight scale model. Many years ago, Pop built his
DEMOISELLE
to fly UC and covered the wings with thin rayon just like the original muslin fabric used in 1908. The 2-1/2" wheels can be either spoked (they were motorcycle front wheels back in the early 1900s) or Williams Bros. World War I scale wheels.
