Louis Grondal
was one of the top international stunt flyers in the late '50s when international competitions required pilots to fly both the FAI and AMA patterns.
Grondal
felt
George Aldrich's Nobler
would handle the AMA pattern much better than typical FAI designs - especially the squares and hourglass - so he essentially modified a
"Green Box 1957 Nobler"
by rounding the wingtips, mounting the landing gear in the wing, and replacing the fuselage top with a slimmer version and a bubble canopy.
That he won World Championship events in 1960, 1961 and 1962 suggests that he was very successful!
Grondal
called his version the
AMA Pattern Special
but it quickly became better known as the
Grondal Nobler.
